Selecting frames and mats:
Selecting the right frame can be a daunting affair. At most, the assistance of the staff can be a mixed bag. The ideal is leading the staff towards your choice.
The first step is matching the most pleasing or dominant color of the pic with the frame. The mat color should also match, if possible, a secondary color inside the picture. The framed pic below is an excellent example.
The pleasant blue frame closely matches the color of the tablecloth, the martini glass stem and the napkin. The silver/grey outer mat matches the tablecloth and the white inner mat is a match as well as a pleasant contrast. The frame and mat combination does not dominate the art work. The combination works.
